When, however, as I said in the
3rd. paragraph above the stage had been reached at which
it appeared reasonable to assume that the sum required
would be obtained, I appointed a Sub-Committee to discuss
the design with Mr. Mody's Architect. Protracted discussions
and revisions have since taken place, and the Committee
eventually submitted a report in which they recorded their
opinion that the original plans were altogether in-
-adequate and they submitted a greatly enlarged design.
This was in part due to the inclusion of accommodation for
a third degree - that of Arte in addition to the two
faculties of Medicine and Engineering originally provided
for, and in part to a much more extended scheme of lecture
rooms, laboratories, and workshops &c., a larger
for
number of students. This larger design was further in-
-creased in cost by the inclusion of a large playing
field which involves a high retaining wall and much levell-
-ing, as well as of houses for the Principal and for the
Professors. It was moreover considered by the Sub-Committee
that the residential quarters for the students should not
be included in the University buildings, and that separate
quarters should be built for them. These quarters are not
included in the buildings which Mr. Mody has undertaken to
erect
